What Factors Affect How Long Sealcoating Takes to Dry?

Drying time shortens or extends based on how quickly moisture leaves the sealant layer. Five variables govern the evaporation rate. They interact with each other. A hot day with high humidity produces a different result than a hot day with low humidity. Each factor is covered in depth in its own section below.

Temperature

Temperature is the primary driver of evaporation speed. Warmer conditions increase the rate at which moisture escapes the sealant. Below 50 degrees Fahrenheit, the process slows below the rate required for proper bonding.

Humidity

High humidity reduces the air’s capacity to absorb additional moisture. The sealant releases water slowly when the surrounding air is already saturated. The humidity section covers the threshold levels and their connection to tacky surfaces.

Sunlight and Wind

Direct sunlight raises the asphalt surface temperature. Wind replaces humid air near the sealant with drier air. Both conditions accelerate the evaporation rate. The sunlight section covers optimal application timing.

Application Thickness

Thicker sealant layers contain more total moisture per unit area. More moisture requires proportionally more time to evaporate. Two thin coats dry faster than one thick coat delivering the same total volume.

Sealer Type and Formula

Different formulations carry different water content and chemical profiles. Coal tar emulsion sealers, asphalt-based sealers, water-based sealers, and solvent-based sealers each carry different baseline dry times. Sealer type also determines how additives and accelerators perform.
